Biochemical and toxicological effects of organic (herbicide Primextra® Gold TZ) and inorganic (copper) compounds on zooplankton and phytoplankton species
In Europe, mainly in the Mediterranean region, an intensive usage of pesticides was recorded during the past 30 years. According to information from agricultural cooperatives of the Mondego valley (Figueira da Foz, Portugal), Primextra® Gold TZ is the most used herbicide in corn crop fields and one of the 20 best-selling herbicides in Portugal. Copper is mainly used in pesticide formulations. This study aims to determine the ecotoxicological and biochemical (namely fatty acid profiles) effects of the herbicide Primextra® Gold TZ and the metal copper on marine plankton. The organisms used in this study are three planktonic species: the marine diatom Thalassiosira weissflogii, the estuarine copepod Acartia tonsa and nauplii of the marine brine shrimp Artemia franciscana. Fatty acids (FAs) are one of the most important molecules transferred across the plant-animal interface in aquatic food webs and can be used as good indicators of stress. The conducted lab incubations show that T. weissflogii is the most sensitive species to the herbicide followed by A. tonsa (EC50 =0;0.0078 mg/L and EC50 =0;0.925 mg/L, respectively), whereas the copepod was the most sensitive species to the metal followed by T. weissflogii (EC50 =0.234 mg/L and EC50 =0.383 mg/L, respectively). A. franciscana was the most tolerant organism both to the herbicide and to the metal (EC50 =20.35 mg/L and EC50 = 18.93 mg/L, respectively). Changes in the FA profiles of primary producer and primary consumers were observed, with the increase of saturated FA and decrease of unsaturated FA contents, especially of highly unsaturated FAs that can be obtained mainly from food and therefore are referred to as ‘essential FA’. The study suggests that discharges of Primextra® Gold TZ or other pesticides mainly composed by copper may be a threat to plankton populations causing changes in the FA contents and thus in their nutritive value, with severe repercussions for higher trophic levels and thus the entire food web
Cosmic ray velocity and electric charge measurements with the AMS/RICH detector: prototype results
The Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS) to be installed on the International
Space Station (ISS) will measure charged cosmic ray spectra of elements up to
iron, in the rigidity range from 1 GV to 1 TV, for at least three years. AMS is
a large angular spectrometer composed of different subdetectors, including a
proximity focusing Ring Imaging CHerenkov (RICH) detector. This will be
equipped with a mixed radiator made of aerogel and sodium fluoride (NaF), a
lateral conical mirror and a detection plane made of 680 photomultipliers
coupled to light guides. The RICH detector allows measurements of particle's
electric charge up to iron, and particle's velocity. Two possible methods for
reconstructing the Cherenkov angle and the electric charge with the RICH will
be discussed.
A RICH prototype consisting of a detection matrix with 96 photomultipliers, a
segment of a conical mirror and samples of the radiator materials was built and
its performance was evaluated using ion beam data. Results from the last test
beam performed with ion fragments resulting from the collision of a 158
GeV/c/nucleon primary beam of indium ions (CERN SPS) on a lead target are
reported. The large amount of collected data allowed to test and characterize
different aerogel samples and the NaF radiator. In addition, the reflectivity
of the mirror was evaluated. The data analysis confirms the design goals.Comment: 5 pages. Contribution to the 20th European Cosmic Ray Symposium in

Isotope separation with the RICH detector of the AMS Experiment
The Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS), to be installed on the International
Space Station (ISS) in 2008, is a cosmic ray detector with several subsystems,
one of which is a proximity focusing Ring Imaging Cherenkov (RICH) detector.
This detector will be equipped with a dual radiator (aerogel+NaF), a lateral
conical mirror and a detection plane made of 680 photomultipliers and light
guides, enabling precise measurements of particle electric charge and velocity.
Combining velocity measurements with data on particle rigidity from the AMS
Tracker it is possible to obtain a measurement for particle mass, allowing the
separation of isotopes. A Monte Carlo simulation of the RICH detector, based on
realistic properties measured at ion beam tests, was performed to evaluate
isotope separation capabilities. Results for three elements -- H (Z=1), He
(Z=2) and Be (Z=4) -- are presented.Comment: 5 pages. Contribution to the Fifth International Workshop on New

Sacred Spaces: meaning, design, construction
The passage from sacred to secular space confers on religious space a wider functionality that will allow the incorporation of an abstract and open spatial symbolism to different perceptions of the divine to see, feel or invoke God. According to Rudolf Otto, on the Protestant churches the architectonic expression of the numinous is made by three fundamental elements of representation: obscurity, silence and emptiness. As elements that conceptually oppose the concrete or definitive symbol, they acquire a universal meaning that modern architecture itself will incorporate as a process of artistic emancipation. For a contemporary architect to design a religious space thus imposes an inevitable incursion into this Protestant matrix that appeals to the simplicity of forms, to the fidelity of construction and to the aesthetic experience as access to the transcendent. The mortuary chapels I am presenting takes up this contact with the modern constructive knowledge and with the return to the essential sacred place made of space, light and matte
CAN JURISDICTIONAL UNCERTAINTY AND CAPITAL CONTROLS EXPLAIN THE HIGH LEVEL OF REAL INTEREST RATES IN BRAZIL? EVIDENCE FROM PANEL DATA
The phenomenon of high and persistent short-term real interest rates in Brazil has stimulated an extensive literature attempting to explain its causes. Among the various contributions on the topic, one that has received considerable attention is the article by Arida, Bacha, and Lara-Resende (2004) (henceforth, ABL), which argues that risks associated with the jurisdiction and currency inconvertibility are relevant determinants of the level of short-term real interest rates. In the present paper, we formulate a methodology based on ABL's definition of jurisdiction uncertainty, use a set of institutional variables that proxy the degree of jurisdictional uncertainty, build an index of currency inconvertibility based on capital controls and use them to test ABL's conjecture and variants of it. The results are by and large unfavorable not only to ABL's conjecture, but also to variants of their argument. The results further indicate that traditional monetary and fiscal factors are far more relevant to explain the level of short-term real interest rates than the binomial jurisdictional uncertainty/ currency inconvertibility is.
O Pulsar da Actividade Física no Ensino Pré-Escolar
do agente educativo.
Associação Reaprender a Viver (ARV), discutimos as causas e
realidade Transmontana, no qual eram factores responsáveis o
